Community—a social group whose members share or have certain attitudes and interests in common.

Today, we live in a world where tech seems to be the new oil. At nearly every turn, there’s somebody telling you how you have to build a career path in the tech space, irrespective of what you studied in school (if you have or are getting a degree).

That’s one of the most beautiful things about the tech space—you don’t need a formal degree from any university to break into this space. You just need to have a working computer, fair enough internet and electricity (I mean, this is Nigeria), the willingness to learn, and find a community.

Building a career in tech gives literal meaning to the saying “no man is an island.” Seeing as there is no exact “school” for this field, you need to surround yourself with like-minded people that can support you and point you in the right direction to find the necessary resources.

A community would provide support for you and constructive criticism. You’ll meet people in your field that have gone through whatever stage you’re at, and you can reach out to them for help.

Imagine having access to many other technical writers, both senior and those at your level, to help critique your articles? What do you think will happen? Of course, you’ll grow faster.

That’s exactly the importance of a community in building a tech career—growth and support.
